Untold Stories from Amsterdam

Most people in Holland ride bicycles. Since, in Amsterdam, it is not safe to leave a bike unattended, everyone chains his or her bike to a metal railing or something else solid.

When walking through Amsterdam the traveler notices a large number of derelict bikes: Bicycles that are – for one reason or another – dam-aged, have missing parts or that have been thrown over the railing.

Every single bike has it's story how it ended up there, but nobody may ever know this story. My intention is to show this very typical facet of Amsterdam street life.

The dismal black & white of the photos reflects the melancholic and silent evidence of all the untold stories that these bikes portray.

Photo series in memory of
Connie Rector

This photo series was a commission for the memorial of Connie Rector. For Connie, a vehicle was strictly for transporting her five granddaughters. She was passionate about biking, not just for how wonderful it made her feel, but also for the environment. Connie tooled around town with her yellow saddle bags full of her worldly possessions, out running errands or riding 10 miles to the Waldorf school where she volunteered. Still, despite her healthy lifestyle, she passed away too early after a long battle with cancer. Ronnie, Connie's daughter, had the inspiration to honor her mother with an artfully orchestrated photo collection of the bicycle taken at various favorite locations of her mother.

It was a pleasure and honor for me to work on this project. I never met Connie in person, but the spirit of the places she loved and her family made me feel and understand that it would have been a reward to have met her in person.
